Assigning a static ip address

Assigning a static ip address -
This is a continuation from my previous post, How to configure my pc to have a static ipaddress?

Each computer in a network has its own IP address. That IP address can be static or dynamic, static which means that it never changes / permanent unless you change it to another one. Dynamically which may change from time to time.

There are different methods in assigning an IP Address, each differs on the operating system that you are using on your pc. I will assume you have windows xp installed.

Follow these steps:

Method I
  1. Open Windows Start Menu, click on the Start.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Open Network and Internet Connections.
  4. Open Network Connections.
  5. Open Local Area Connection or Internet Connection.
  6. Click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
  7. Now the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is highlighted, click on Properties.
  8. In the General Tab, Click on Use the following IP address.
  9. In the IP Address field enter the static IP address you want to assign to your computer.
      • For example: 192.168.1.x
  10. In the Subnet Mask field enter the subnet mask used by your router.
      • For example: 255.255.255.0
  11. In the Default Gateway field enter your router's ip address or your routers default gateway.
  12. In Use the following DNS server addresses, enter all the IP addressses for the DNS servers your router uses.

Talking about productivity and security

Productivity and security is the most important thing to remember this days. To browse the internet more securely I recommend that you install and use FireFox instead of Internet Explorer to prevent malicious softwares, spywares and other threat. It's the first step to secured browsing. Check the top on the left sidebar to download FireFox now.

How to configure my pc to have static ip address?

How to configure my pc to have a static ip address?

First what is a static ip address?
  • In simple terms it is a fixed address assigned to a device such as a Personal Computer/Laptop, PDA, network printers and more.
  • This is in contrast to a dynamic IP address which may change at any time.

Do you need a router?

The question do I need a router always comes into question. The answer is yes and no. If you have only one computer at home, you don't need a router, but if you have at least two computer that needs to access the internet at the same time, then you need a router. Plus if you have additional device that needs an internet connection to work, a router will solve your problem.

What is a router?

A router is a network device that delivers Internet Protocol (IP) data packets to and from multiple computers or devices on a network. You may already have a router attached your DSL or Cable modem and your computer. A router allows you to connect more than one device to your Internet connection at the same time. It acts as a junction between two or more networks to transfer data packets among them.

Your router must:

  • Be DSL/Cable Modem web-safe
  • Provide NAT (Network Address Translation)
  • Provide DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol)

Most routers support these requirements.

Local Area Network (LAN)

A local area network (LAN) is a group of computers and associated devices that share a common communications line or wireless link. By far the most common type of data network. A LAN serves a local area (typically the area of a floor, in close proximity to each other such as in an office building, home, or school.)

Another reminder to everybody, PLEASE PROTECT YOUR PC

PLEASE PROTECT YOUR PC- YOU PROTECT YOUR PC, YOU PROTECT THE SERVER.

Today I'll leave you with this reminder, again, please protect your pc, scan your pc for viruses, spyware, adware, malware, trojans and other threats / unwanted software.

How do I do this, you ask?
  1. Use a Firewall
    • This helps keep out hackers and some viruses, if you have a router at home or at the office, most of them have a built in firewall, but you might have to enable it. If you have Windows XP Professional, Windows XP Home and Windows XP Media Center, you have to enable the firewall, or use a firewall software app of your choice.
  2. Secure your wireless connection
    • All wireless connection by default don't have protection enabled, you have to enable it the first time you use it, if not you're vulnerable
  3. For Windows users, always download the latest update
  4. Install Antivirus Software
  5. Fight Spyware
  6. Backup your files regularly.
Remember, YOU PROTECT YOUR PC, YOU PROTECT THE SERVER

The sound card problem fixed

The sound card problem on the my post last Jan 13, 2007 has been fixed. The pci card needed to be reinserted. After that, everything was, fine, no hardware dectection problem encountered, everything went smooth.

If you want to read the post click here.

Sometimes expansion cards / pci cards, needs to be pulled out and reinserted in a new expansion slot, the current slot is probably damage, or dirty, you might need to slightly clean the inside of your CPU with a soft paint brush.

Another Sound Card Problem, with HP A1510n

Remember 2 of my previous post about the sound card problem on a HP Pavilion A1510n
I have another one, the same problem involving a sound card, this one running windows 2000 professional. I did the same thing, I downgraded the OS from Windows XP Media Center, W2k Pro to have full network functionality, after Win2k installation, I simply used the recovery disk that I created so I can have Win2k Detect and install the hardware. The video was installed with no problem, same with the LAN interface and the modem, except the sound card.

Anyway, on the other HP Pavilion A1510n see these post:
So yeah, we bought another Comp USA Sound Card, and installed in this Win2k PC, but on this one, the driver that came with PCI Sound card, also didn't work. I'm still trying to figure out my next move. Any suggestions? Let me work on it and I'll get back to you.

This post is for my dad and mom

Footprints In The Sand
by Mary Stevenson

One night I dreamed I was walking
Along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints.
Other times there were one set of footprints.
This bothered me because I noticed that
During the low periods of my life when I was
Suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints,
So I said to the Lord, "You promised me,
Lord, that if I followed You,
You would walk with me always.
But I noticed that during the most trying periods
Of my life there have only been
One set of prints in the sand.
Why, When I have needed You most,
You have not been there for me?"
The Lord replied,
"The times when you have seen only one set of footprints
Is when I carried you."

This was written by Mary Stevenson and distributed by Mary to those who needed something to give them comfort at a low point in their lives.

The reason for this post, I found out today that my mom's illness is Terminal / Stage Four, and have to undergo chemo therapy. May I ask for a small favor, please keep my mom and my dad in your prayers .

Thank you, I appreciate it

Digital Disaster in Asia

As of yesterday parts of Asia including Manila are still experiencing slow internet connection caused by the massive undersea earthquake of 7.1 magnitude which hit Taiwan's southern coast.

According to reports seven of the eight major undersea fiber-optic communication cables near southern Taiwan were heavily damaged. Because of the damaged done by the Earthquake Internet and telecommunications within East Asia and to Europe and to US remains interrupted.

Comp USA Sound Card for the HP Pavilion A1510n

Internet Access Still Down in most parts of Manila and Asia

Most parts of Manila and Asia are still suffering from slow Internet connection because of the disruptions caused by a powerful earthquake off Taiwan last December 28, 2006. According to reports the earthquake damaged submarine cables that serves as a backbone that connects the Philippines to the world by Internet.

Last night Apex (Manila Office) are still experiencing problems with their Internet Connection. When I asked them to go to 2wire.com and check their Internet connection speed, the result was 28.8kbps. This is dial up speed and won't work with Terminal Services.

Can they connect to the server and login? At times they can but it is really sluggish and often they freezed. Other users that are currently working at that time are also affected, and will cause traffic.
